Solar powered electricity is process created by initiating solar photovoltaic technology which converts sunlight into solar electricity. A solar photovoltaic cell consists of two or more thin layers of semi-conducting material, most widely used is silicon, there are other materials that can be used. The solar cell is exposed to sunshine, electrical charges are created and this can be conducted away by metal contacts as direct current electricity (DC). The electrical output from a single solar photovoltaic cell is minimal, a series of solar cells are connected together and covered with glass or other protective barrier to form a solar panel or solar module. Just as solar cells are added together to make a solar panel, many solar panels or modules can be connected to form the desired electrical output.
